CLAWSON, Mich. (WJBK) – He is a one man trek around the state of Michigan. His message: Take a break from the big box stores and spend some money at a locally owned store.

If you were driving through Clawson on Thursday, you might have seen George Morse running down the street. What you probably did not see was him ducking into small, locally owned businesses with a video camera.

“I’m visiting 200 towns and cities are over the state and running five miles in each place to help support and promote small businesses,” said Morse. (continues below)

He is running to inspire you to shop at mom and pop stores. Morse says if we each just tried a new place a couple of times each month, the impact would be huge. He should know.

“I got started in Subway franchises 17 years ago. It’s been a good business for my wife and (me). After growing that business, about six years ago, in addition to that, I started coaching and consulting small businesses and helping people,” Morse said.

Jeff Geralds of the Clawson Chamber of Commerce owns a small business himself, and he applauds Morse’s efforts.

“Local businesses are the strength, the heart and soul of a community. They provide jobs for the local citizens, and they provide tax revenues for the cities to provide services,” he said.

Morse is about half way through his run around the state. You can follow his adventure online at www.thousandmilesformichigan.com.
